Paradigm, No. 1 (November, 1989)

Un peu de histoire

First things first. The idea of holding colloquia on textbooks and all that might spring therefrom came from Chris Stray and Ian Michael. They organised the first colloquium, held in London in 1988. That successful day prompted the second colloquium, at Eton. Both are reported below. We are now at the interesting, slightly perilous stage of working out how best to conduct our affairs. We have plenty of goodwill and interest and are unencumbered by anything so vulgar as money. However, we will need a little healthy vulgarity from time to time, partly in order to prepare and circulate this newsletter; that is, if we want a newsletter. The question will be answered easily enough when we see, firstly, whether members will send enough material to make up a publication, secondly, whether they will pay the modest cost of production.

The kind of material which the newsletter should contain is also a matter for members of the group. At present, we aim to include notes and news on the progress of the group, dates of meetings, abstracts of papers given and direct contributions, reviews of or comments on books likely to interest, notes of work in progress, requests for information: in short, anything likely to advance our common purpose. Above all, the Newsletter must be flexible as the Group itself is flexible.
